    City Council Candidate
  • Three words that define you?

    1) Optimistic - see the positive side of things, 2) Outgoing - easy to approach and converse with, 3) Open-minded - ability to listen without judging.

Why are you running for the City Council, and what related experience do you bring to the table that makes you uniquely qualified?

I’m not running because I see anything inherently broken, but I envision how Sauk Centre is, and can become, a welcome mecca for travelers, business and residents.  People are moving here from nearby towns, as they see positive things happening in our community.

Not sure I’m unique or qualified - based on whose definition we use.  Background in the printing industry, (Pricing, Sales, Writing) in Long Prairie, Detroit Lakes, Clarissa, Alexandria/Osakis. Real estate, (owned, renovated and sold 6 homes in various locations in MN).  Observation of activities offered and spending priorities while living and working in those towns.

Do you think it is important to have a competitive business climate and how can we improve our competitiveness to make sure private sector businesses can start and grow in our community?

Main Street seems to be the “hot” spot in town for small businesses, but is getting rather congested.  There are underutilized buildings/spaces in close proximity that could be renovated - all directions from the stoplight.  An Antique Mall comes to mind.

We seem to have a fair amount of foot traffic in the area.  A Fall Festival with decorated streets would extend the shopping season and take us into the Christmas rush.

Name the two or three most critical issues you believe the City of Sauk Centre faces and how would you address those issues?

I’ve been told this is unrealistic, but the North end of town could use a revamp. The multi-stop sign area where the curve enters town is a high-traffic nightmare.  Perhaps we could redirect Hwy 71 during the upcoming resurfacing project to alleviate the congestion and add a stoplight.  While we’re dreaming, how about adding a combination motel/dining establishment in that area.  Turn the Senior Center into a Visitor Center, and move the Senior Center closer to the interior hub of the town to make it more accessible to the elderly.

How would you engage the business community as you weigh your decisions?

I understand we already have a “meet and greet” of sorts at different businesses periodically.  Not sure how well-attended they are, but personal notifications and a calendar of when and where they’re held may be helpful.  Visits/tours by the City Council members and Chamber periodically to improve public relations and personalize their experience with the governing bodies.
